If you’ve ever had the sudden urge to eat at Munchie Monkey at NUS… there are now 2 of us ;)

Sometime last week, perhaps sick of the rest of the food in school, I felt like, y’know, I just HAD to eat at Munchie Monkey’s. So off we traipsed to YIH, where we walked into the lunchtime non-crowd (a good thing). It was a familiar, friendly place. Just nice for lunch.

Unfortunately, what’s on the menu isn’t necessarily, y’know, on the menu. We tried to order a very exciting dish (I can’t remember what it’s called), at which point we were told that it was not available. (The chef’s special, how dare they!) So we switched to dory fish pasta thing, whereupon, after 5 minutes, we were told that they could only serve 1 more portion of it. (The chef’s special again!) So, frustrated, I ordered yet another Chef’s special; this one was available.

The food that they did sell was quite good. The grilled chicken primavera pasta was tasty, especially the grilled chicken. The dory fish pasta was ok, but the sauce helped to make it extra tasty! My fried food combo (that’s what I call it anyway) was ginormous, and tasted alright. The drinks were uniformly tasty, which was a plus, and the dessert was surprisingly good, so all in all… a bit expensive for the quality, but for a change, why not once or twice?

Decided to get a rolling with a quick post. I know we’re mainly a food review blog, but there’s no harm tossing in a couple of “do it yourself” entries once in a while, eh?

Today my sister and I decided to whip up some cupcakes, to cheer us up a bit in this gloomy weather. It’s a really really simple recipe, essentially you just mix all the ingredients together and pop it in the oven.

Vanilla Cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

For the Cupcakes:

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs

1) Preheat oven to 350F, line your muffin tray with paper cups.
2) Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl.
3) Add the butter, milk and vanilla. Beat on medium for a minute.
4) Add in the eggs, and beat until smooth and creamy.
5) Spoon the batter into the paper liners till about 2/3 full.
6) Bake for about 20 minutes, or till a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

For the Frosting:

300g butter
500g icing sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
4 tablespoons hot water

1) Beat the butter and sugar until well combined.
2) Add in the cocoa powder and water, beat until smooth and creamy.

Decorate as you please ;)

And really, that’s about it.

I made 27 cupcakes, and have enough frosting left over for another 5-10 cupcakes, so you should probably adjust your quantities according. I’d reccomend just halving the recipe for the frosting and keeping the one for the cakes as is, because I didn’t quite fill the paper cups enough, and ended up with more cupcakes than I should have had.

Also, the frosting is pretty sweet, so you really don’t need to use too much of it per cupcake.

Hello fellow bimbos,

Welcome to gastronobimbo! Let the greediness and bimboness begin….

Hello world!

Back in the day, Britbrit and I used to go to a new restaurant every Friday night. We’d attempt to do up reviews, took a lot of pictures, even registered FridayNightFood so we could share our findings with the world. As you can tell, that didn’t work out so well.

Almost two years later, I was going through the archives on my personal blog and I stumbled across that link. It brought back a lot of memories, and I had to share it with Britbrit. She suggested we try to revive FNF, but I simply could not figure out which email address I registered it under.

So here I am, setting up a new blog. We don’t have a regular dinner date night anymore, but we still eat out a lot. And a lot of the time, the rest of the bimbo gang is there as well. And when we all get together, shenanigans usually ensue.

I’ll let everyone introduce themselves as they join up, and hopefully this thing will get a little further off ground than FNF did.

Welcome to Gastronobimbo, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoy your stay!
